Censoring Blue
Yves Klein said "Colour and taste require discernment, sexual relations are a primal state".
Playing house in the 1970's as a child I found my step fathers "adult only" magazine collection in a rusty old stove in our basement kitchen. I never told them about it. One magazine, that shocked me most centred around food and bright blue eyeshadow. The ladies Yves Klein blue eye makeup was beautiful however they were doing weird things with food that I actually regularly ate, liked and would often have whilst watching kids TV which disturbed and confused me.
At the time I aspired to be a gymnast/dancer so admired the women's flexibility and agility. I was however was bewildered by what the adults were doing. I remember wondering "is as this what grown-ups did?" and if so, I definitely didn’t want to when I grew up!
To make this series, I actively searched out pornographic images from the same era that vividly reminded of this memory. In erasing and re-creating graphic elements with glossy seductive paint I intended to turn something ugly into something beautiful that I wouldn’t be ashamed, disgusted and guilty of hanging in a public space.
