Joanna Black is an Edinburgh based artist who exhibited internationally.

Joanna is Polish/Scottish. Her mother and father were both Polish. Her Mother was a world war 2 orphan who lost half her family to the Nazis and half her family to Stalin. Her father was Polish and came from highly decorated military family and returned to Poland when she was less than 2 years of age. Not knowing her family roots spurred an interest in the themes of memory, life/death, relationships, fragility, contradiction, feminism, determination, humanity, anatomy, appearances, childhood and reinvention that recur throughout her work.

Referencing a variety of imagery – her work embraces memories from life. She creates a visual relationship between herself and her work by embracing the imperfections between the recognizable and the ephemeral.

Joanna’s work has been shown in MOMA Tiblisi, France, Scotland and the US and she has had honorary mentions from IPA, Critical Mass, Emergentes DST. Her work is collected internationally.

Joanna is a self taught artist who until being “found” in 2011 by Center, Santa Fe. Prior to that she led a corporate career. Having had her work reviewed by various international curators, she and has been described as an “emerging artist whose work is one to watch” and now works full time as an artist.
